Saclum
where the roads end
Our travels have taken us to one of the southernmost regions of Mexico. Incredibly beautiful, the state of Chiapas is filled with mountains, jungles, forests, and rivers. Our work took us high into some of these mountains, long drives, to places where the roads ends. Big skies, blanketing forests, wide vistas through the window. Landing in the beautiful village of Saclum in a clearing in the trees.
Women led cooperatives
The artisans are a cooperative entirely made up of women from a village. We are working with the NGO Aid to Artisans in our work with these communities. They are an incredible organization that is facilitating and training cooperatives to manage and grow their work. We feel really lucky to be working with such an excellent organization. It is so thoughtfully run, with the goal of aiding women to successfully run their own businesses. It was wonderful to work with these group of women all day. There were lots of babies, kids, and puppies running around while we worked.
Collaboration
The traditional embroidery of this village is really beautiful and really fine. We showed them our color story and some inspiration. Each artisan created their own interpretation. We worked these ideas into the designs we used for this season. It’s beautiful and interesting to see that all the women in one village wear the same outfit, in a consistent: a color story and silhouette. They personalize their huipiles, the traditional blouses, with the different embroideries.
TechniquE
The embroidery technique in Saclum requires incredible skill and is very labor intensive. They use two fabrics for the embroidery. The top fabric is used as guide for their artwork. For the artwork, they have the patterns memorized and they use the fine weave of the fabric to count the stitches. When the embroidery is finished, they remove the top fabric, thread by thread. It is exceedingly time consuming, and the result is very fine and exacting.
creating the dress
Working with the artisans, we describe the style we want to do, and work with them using their traditional motifs on an untraditional fabric base: silk.
